And in the dark, I can hear your heartbeat
I tried to find the sound
But then it stopped, and I was in the darkness,
So darkness I became

The stars, the moon, they have all been blown out
You left me in the dark
No dawn, no day, I'm always in this twilight
In the shadow of your heart

"Cosmic Love"
by Florence + The Machine

----
This is actually a WIP that's part of larger image -- or rather, a set of images. I was going to try to explain the whole thing in the description of one deviation, but I decided to just explain as I go along. I'm sure most of you will figure out what I was thinking, though.

This idea was sitting in the back of my mind for awhile now (so apologies if there are inconsistencies with canon. This went through my mind early on in the season). I have this tendency of drawing fanart to whatever is currently on my playlist. This time it just happened to be "Cosmic Love" by Florence + The Machine. While I normally think of this song as depicting a more romantic relationship, I couldn't help but imagine it describing the relationship between Luna and Celestia through Luna's eyes. I've included a link to this image on Tumblr, where you'll also be able to listen to this song. WARNING: I'm bad at relating images to songs and even worse at trying to explain what goes on through my head when I do so. If you want to spare yourself the explanation and any additional brain hemorrhaging, feel free to skip the fine print and go straight to the :target:.

While listening to this song, I kept thinking of what Luna and Celestia's relationship was like when they were fillies. I like to think that they were very close, being the only family each other had. However, as they grew up and were presented with new responsibilities, they were left with little time for one another. After seeing how Celestia was always preoccupied during most of the season, I thought that once she started having to tend to similar matters, she was left with very little time to spend with her younger sister. Also, I believed she was probably shouldering a litte more as the older of the two siblings. So, Celestia was always being swept away with some matter of urgency.

Luna, still being fairly young, longed for those special moments she once shared with her sister, and she grew sadder as time passed. Alone in her night, she not only became jealous because of the attention Celestia's day received, which made her feel unappreciated, but also because she felt she was losing her sister. Although she felt neglected, Luna tried to hold on to the love and memories of her sister, but eventually the darkness that was growing inside overwhelmed and consumed her, which left her vulnerable to the entity that created Nightmare Moon. (Oh, kids and their tantrums when they want attention) Then, of course, Celestia sent her into the moon and that really pissed her off, LOLOLOL. (cont'd in the next submission)

:target:TL;DR - I made up some cheesy story to go along witht this song about how Luna felt neglected by Celestia and became sad, angry, and then Nightmare Moon.

The images don't really do anything in telling the story. I was planning to lay it out like that at first, but this crap came out instead, haha. I'll try to fix the errors in it as I go along.

Wonderful. Luna's eyes, filled with tears and sorrow and longing, but not regret or fear, makes it so much more believable, shows so much more clearly why she became Nightmare Moon, who does a fantastic job of being a menacing foreshadowing in the background. Poor little Luna, left in the dark and the cold.

A falling star fell from your heart and landed in my eyes
I screamed aloud, as it tore through them, and now it's left me blind

The stars, the moon, they have all been blown out
You left me in the dark
No dawn, no day, I'm always in this twilight
In the shadow of your heart

And in the dark, I can hear your heartbeat
I tried to find the sound
But then, it stopped, and I was in the darkness,
So darkness I became

The stars, the moon, they have all been blown out
You left me in the dark
No dawn, no day, I'm always in this twilight
In the shadow of your heart

I took the stars from my eyes, and then I made a map
And knew that somehow I could find my way back
Then I heard your heart beating, you were in the darkness too
So I stayed in the darkness with you

The stars, the moon, they have all been blown out
You left me in the dark
No dawn, no day, I'm always in this twilight
In the shadow of your heart

The stars, the moon, they have all been blown out
You left me in the dark
No dawn, no day, I'm always in this twilight
In the shadow of your heart~

Amazing work! I have a question... I am currently in the process of writing a fanfic about the fall of Luna, and have been scouting around looking for something that would make a cover for it. I haven't made a final choice yet, but when I do, would you mind if I used this wonderful piece of art as the cover? I understand completely if you wish for me to not use it.

I wouldn't mind at all! Feel free to use it if you'd like. I can't even believe that you'd like it enough to consider using it. Thank you! =)

I like the stars in the back, the poem is nice as well. Love the backstory you came up with for you artistic interpretaion, both physical talent and imagination, great motivation almost always to something well made.
